The next time you get a whiff of a rave party in your neighbourhood or see a hippie-looking character trying to pass on drugs to youngsters, just dial a number and help the police.

The Anti Narcotics Cell (ANC) of the Mumbai police has introduced helplines for people to give information about suspected drug peddlers and about those consuming drugs. “We are aiming at maximum participation by people. We need their support to help us remove drug menace from our society,” said Vishwas Nangre Patil, deputy commissioner of police, ANC.

Four telephone numbers have been opened for public through which officials from the ANC can be informed about narcotic drugs related activities.

The phone numbers will directly connect the alert citizen to the deputy commissioner of police, the ANC office, ANC headquarters, ANC control room and ANC units located at Azad Maidan and Kandivili.

If citizens are apprehensive about calling up, they can write letters to the ANC offices. Police have promised confidentiality of the caller will be maintained.

Five thousand pamphlets with information about the helpline numbers and addresses of ANC offices will be put up at prominent places across the city, including notice boards at schools and colleges. Students can send the cards to the police with details of suspicious activities.
