DJ Ma Faiza —  of Indian origin — was born in Africa, but later moved to London and has now been settled in Pune since the past 15 years. She is in Mumbai to conduct a workshop on DJing and electronic dance music (better known as EDM).

So what is she going to teach at the workshop? “At the workshop I will first try to understand what level of music sensibilities the person I am interacting with shares. Once I get a fair idea, I will answer his queries. For instance, I will play tracks and ask them to identify them. It's my way of making the exchange as interactive as possible,” says the 38-year-old DJ.

She will give an EDM demonstration for about 15 minutes so as to showcase the cool DJ techniques and technology. “I want to impress them with my DJing technique —  that's how I will be able to command their respect and take the forum forward,” says Ma Faiza who never intended being a DJ in the first place. She came to Goa about 15 years ago and realised that people appreciated, and were willing to pay any amount for listening to music that had just become all the rage in London pubs and clubs. That's when the idea struck and “I wanted to bring that music to India, so I went head-long into it and the rest is history”.

“I've grown organically, I don't play commercial music. I'm not DJ Aqueel nor DJ Nasha,” says the tall and broad-shouldered lady who purposely made Ma a part of her name so people wouldn’t mistake her for a man! Seems like an interesting personality. But we’ll just have to find out, won't we?
