'Slumdog Millionaire' set to make a mark at Oscars: UK media

Slumdog Millionaire, a feel good film about a Mumbai tea-boy which bagged seven BAFTA awards, has built up "an extraordinary tidal wave of momentum" and is poised to sweep across the Atlantic to Los Angeles -- the Oscars, the British media said on Tuesday.
    
"The (Sunday) night obviously belonged to Slumdog Millionaire, which has now built up an extraordinary tidal wave of momentum," The Guardian said.

Its director Danny Boyle "won thousands more hearts and minds with his very charming and heartfelt speech" at the awards ceremony, the report said.

On the awards night, Boyle had said the prize was for Mumbai.
    
"We are hugely indebted for everybody honoured and those who were nominated tonight, to the people of Mumbai especially the actors Anil (Kapoor) and Irrfan (Khan) and all the other young actors who helped us - Ayush and Azhar," said Boyle after accepting the award for Best director.

"It's landslide victory, and the best actress victory for Kate Winslet", who is a Briton too, "made this a tremendously
good night for the British industry," the report said.

It described Slumdog Millionaire as "an entertaining, likeable and brash modern fairy story shot with tremendous pizazz but not exactly profound on the question of globalisation, poverty, 21st century India or anything else."

"... Watching a movie come from nowhere to win big against the pampered main players and self-adoring A-listers is exciting and heartening, like an old-fashioned giant-killing upset in the FA Cup," the report said.
    
It said Slumdog Millionaire is intriguing, though because it is very difficult to pin down.
    
It said the time is ripe to state that 18-year-old newcomer Dev Patel, the man lead of the movie, "really does give a terrifically relaxed and persuasive performance."

"... there is a touch of tulip fever being incubated in the Slumdog mania, which is now poised to sweep across the Atlantic to Los Angeles."

Slumdog Millionaire swept the BAFTA, British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), awards when it won seven prizes including the Best Music Score for Indian composer AR Rahman and the Best Film at the prestigious award function here.
