As a build-up event to the Commonwealth Games in the national capital next month, a group of eight English girls will hand over the replica of Queen's Baton at the India Gate lawns after performing at about 60 ft above the ground.
Dubbed as "angels in the sky", eight girls from London's Toll Theatre will showcase their skill in the sky for 20 minutes before landing at the 12-feet multi-level stage erected at the lawns to hand over the ceremonial baton to Indian artists on March 8.
While the sky dance will be performed at about 60 ft above the ground, 120 Indian artists will be performing on the elevated multi-level stage simultaneously. The two-hour colourful event being finalised by Commonwealth Games Secretariat for the unveiling of the baton will also have special laser and lighting shows with the help of state-of-the-art equipment brought from abroad.
"The sky performance by the Toll girls with the help of hi-tech cranes is going to be the first of its kind in the country," an official in the Games secretariat said.
The stage is expected to come alive with a multilayered kaleidoscope of various Indian dance forms across the country that specially mirrors energy, fitness and flexibility
involving popular artists, the official said.
"The unveiling of the ceremonial baton event is being planned as a precursor of the mega event to celebrate the spirit of Delhi that mirrors spirit of India and also the celebration of spirit of Commonwealth Games," the official said.
Besides participation of popular artists in the event, an auto driver, a betel shop owner, a college student and a housewife are also expected to join the dance performance on
the stage as a symbolic participation of common man of Delhi.
According to the earlier plan, secretariat was planning to invite UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi to receive the baton.
"But since the model code of conduct is likely to be enforced in the first week of March, it would not be possible to invite her," said the official and added "Lt Governor of
Delhi Tejinder Khanna is expected to be the chief guest to receive the baton."
