57-year-old Fayyad was appointed prime minister by Western-backed Abbas in June 2007 in response to the violent takeover of Gaza Strip by Hamas.
Western-backed Palestinian prime minister Salam Fayyad on Saturday, resigned from his post to pave the way for the formation of a national unity government, ahead of the start of reconciliation dialogue between Fatah and Hamas.
"Prime minister Salam Fayyad announced tendering the resignation of his cabinet to President Mahmoud Abbas, effective once a government of national reconciliation is formed, but no later than the end of March," the prime minister's office said in a statement here.
Fayyad's decision is supposed to be a confidence-building measure ahead of the resumption of Palestinian reconciliation talks between the two rival factions in Cairo under Egyptian mediation on Tuesday.
"(It) comes to enhance and support the national dialogue to reach a national unity government," Abbas said after receiving Fayyad's resignation letter but asked him to "continue with his work until we see the results".
The move however failed to impress Islamic faction Hamas, which vanquished Palestinian Authority forces loyal to Abbas in June 2007 seizing complete control over Gaza Strip.
"This government did not work for the sake of the Palestinians. It worked for its own agenda. This end was expected for a government that was illegal and unconstitutional," Hamas spokesman in Gaza Fawzi Barhoum said.
57-year-old Fayyad was appointed prime minister by Western-backed Abbas in June 2007 in response to the violent takeover of Gaza Strip by Hamas.
Though the West and many countries around the world recognised the Palestinian Authority government led by him but its rule practically remained limited to the West Bank.
Negotiations between Hamas and Abbas' Fatah movement are geared towards the formation of a transition government that would prepare for Presidential and parliamentary elections by January 2010.
The political split between Fatah and Hamas broke out into the open in January 2006 when Hamas won parliament elections, defeating rival Fatah.
Arab mediators attempted to bridge the gaps, but failed, and Hamas seized power by force in 2007.
In response, Abbas fired prime minister Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas and replaced him with Fayyad, while Israel and Egypt responded by closing Gaza's borders.
