Most star kids in India follow their father’s footsteps. However, former Indian cricketer Bishan Singh Bedi’s son Angad Bedi decided to tread a different line. A self-confessed Amitabh Bachchan fan, Angad decided to try his luck at the movies. His perseverance paid off as he’s doing pretty well for himself in Bollywood.
“Earlier, my life revolved around cricket. I played for Delhi in the Ranji Trophy, the U-19 team and even county cricket in England for a few years. But there was a side in me that wasn’t a keen cricket fan. That side loved watching movies,” he says.
He adds: “I never told anyone that I wanted to act. But during my schooling and college days I did a lot of theatre, attended acting workshops and took part in elocutions too. The feeling to take up acting grew stronger when I realised that though I was playing well for my side, I was getting dropped. My father is a very outspoken man and so there were people who did not like his views. There was too much politics in cricket in Delhi and I took the decision that I should try out what I longed for.”
Angad, who is also a model, says it was his feat on the ramp that got him the necessary attention. “I did JJ Valaya’s show and the show was a hit. My photos were splashed in newspapers with the headline ‘Bishan Singh’s son debuts on the ramp’. A film-maker named Sashi Kumar approached me to act in his international film (Kaya Taran) based on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and I worked with Seema Biswas. The film went to Venice and Cannes and that’s how it all started,” he says.
“I’m working hard and I’m very happy to be in Mumbai. Here, there’s no politics and moreover I’m out of my father’s shadow. No one is comparing me to him here. I have to prove myself and I know I can do that by working diligently,” he ends.
Angad's doing it
Twenty-five-year-old Angad Bedi reveals that he has signed a three-film deal with Suniel Shetty’s production house Popcorn Entertainment. He is also currently filming for Joy Augustine’s movie The Little Godfather. We learn that he has also auditioned for Shah Rukh Khan’s forthcoming production to be directed by Roshan Abbas. Film-maker Amole Gupte has also shown a keen interest in him.
