DGCA raps ATC for poor safety records
The DGCA has sought a detailed explanation within a fortnight from the Mumbai ATC about the untoward incidents that have taken place at Mumbai airport.

The Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has sought a detailed explanation within a fortnight from the Mumbai Air Traffic (ATC) head MG Jhungare about the untoward incidents that have taken place at Mumbai airport in the last four months.
In a meeting held in Delhi on May 11, the DGCA officials reprimanded Jhungare for maintaining shoddy records.
A string of high-profile incidents like the Indian Air Force (IAF) chopper from president Pratibha Patil’s entourage making a ‘surprise’ landing on the runway, Anil Ambani’s chopper sabotage, etc, have brought the security issue at Mumbai airport to the fore. Also, the manner in which they were handled has forced the DGCA to take stringent actions against the ATC.
“We have observed that Mumbai ATC head does not inform us about the incidents involving air safety that occur at the airport. We had a meeting with the senior ATC officials in Delhi to sort out the issue,” said a senior DGCA official from Mumbai.
“The records are poorly maintained. Jhungare has been asked to file a detailed report of all the incidents involving air safety and the follow up action.”
When contacted, Nasim Zaidi, director general of civil aviation, confirmed the news. “Yes, we have asked Mumbai ATC to file a detailed report,” he said. Jhungare was not available for comment.
The ATC GM is also facing charges for submitting a fake caste certificate to get a job in 1985. The Airport Authority of India (AAI) stumbled on the case in 2006. Jhungare claimed that the certificate was submitted to the authority and was not returned. He later furnished his brother’s caste certificate, which mentioned his caste as Dhoba — a scheduled tribe. However, his school records show his caste as Dhobi (OBC in Maharashtra).
