“Agyan namaskar, mu Naveen Patnaik kahuchhi (Hello this is Naveen Patnaik speaking). Thanks for voting for BJD”, said a recorded message when school teacher Anita Mohanty answered the phone.
Not one to forget his voters after winning, Naveen Patnaik is thanking residents of Orissa over the phone, both landline and mobile, for reposing their faith in him and his party.
After thanking the people, the message goes on to say, “I will continue to work for the progress of the state. If you have any message, send it to me after the beep”. In order to win people’s heart, Patnaik speaks in chaste Oriya.
During his election campaign, Naveen had used a similar technique to woo people and the response was encouraging. “It was an innovative campaign that boosted Naveen’s image. So we decided to follow it up with a message of thanks. This is part of BJD’s hi-tech campaign,” a senior BJP leader said.
As for people, they are elated. “At last, Naveen recognised the importance of the voters,” said Mohanty, adding that she had never expected to get a call from Naveen after the election was over.
“Politicians forget their voters once the elections are over. Naveen has proved that he is different and that’s why people voted for him,” Kankalata Mohanty, 70, a writer, said.
The message is being aired through a voice recorder from a Delhi telephone number, 911146638848. Earlier, Naveen had sought the blessings and cooperation of the people using the same mobile number as part of his campaign.
He also asked all the 103 elected members to use different forums to thank people for electing them. “You should work as a sevak of the people,” Patnaik said while addressing elected members on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Naveen called on governor MC Bhandare and staked claim for the formation of the government. He also submitted a list of 103 elected members of his party. The swearing-in-ceremony would be held at 11.30 am on Thursday.
However, Patnaik maintained that the BJD would play the role of Opposition in Delhi. “We will not support Congress at Centre,” he told reporters.
