Qualcomm announced a new processor that will take smart wearable to the next generation--the Snapdragon 2100 which specifically intended smart wearable like smartwatches, smart bands, smart eyewear, smart headgear and the like.

The company says that there will be two variants of the processor: a tethered version that uses Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to communicate with a nearby smartphone, and a connected version that uses a next-generation LTE modem tht also includes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The latter is engineered so users can take their wearables on the go--streaming music, answering calls, sending messages and more, directly via their wearable with no need for a paired phone.

As of now the majority of smartwatches use Qualcomm's Snapdragon 400 platform which was originally developed for smartphones. According to Qualcomm, the new Snapdragon 2100 is not only intended for smart wear but will also see a reduction in size and an increase in power efficiency, likely for use in other smaller IoT applications.

The company says that the new chip will be 30 percent smaller than the 400 model, which should help manufacturers build smaller sleeker technology and consumes 25 percent less power owing to an integrated ultra low power sensor hub allowing Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and app developers the freedom to play around with the extra battery life.

Qualcomm says that the processors are already being developed and that smartwatches should be commercially available in the second half of this year.

David Yoon, vice president, wearables, LG Electronics said, “We are delighted about Qualcomm Technologies’ next generation wearable plans. We are planning to extend our collaboration with the new Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor, and look forward to launching new smartwatches and other wearable devices that bring new and innovative use cases to consumers later this year.”
