Manuel Jose resigned as Angola coach on Saturday, ending a brief stay several months before the end of his contract.

Jose told a news conference he had turned down the offer of a new contact for personal reasons, the state-run Angop news agency reported.

"Everybody expressed their satisfaction with my work here but at the age of 64 what is left of my coaching career is short," he told the news conference.

The Portuguese coach took over eight months ago on a one-year deal to steer the hosts through the African Nations Cup finals.

Angola finished top of their first round group but were eliminated by an under-strength Ghana in the quarter-finals.

Jose's assistant, Zeca Amaral, has been appointed caretaker coach until a permanent replacement is found, the Angolan Football Federation said.
