The Income Tax department today attached three bank accounts of Punjab Cricket Association (PCA), Mohali for not paying tax to the tune of Rs. 6.5 crore.

"We have attached the bank accounts of PCA as it has failed to pay their tax due which has been assessed at Rs6.5 crore," income tax commissioner AK Kaushal told PTI here today.

The department attached the accounts of PCA in three banks including HDFC, ICICI and PNB under section 226 of Income Tax Act.

Income Tax department had earlier asked the PCA to pay tax on their income generated during the period of 2002-03 and 2007-08 in the month of December last year.

The charitable status of PCA was withdrawn by Income Tax department last year following its survey operations conducted on it which revealed that it was not maintaining separate books of accounts for its charitable activities.

"Then we assessed the income of the PCA and worked out tax of Rs6.5 crore which it was to pay," Kaushal said adding "PCA was given enough time to pay their dues but it did not do so".

The department had first issued the notice to PCA in December last year for payment of tax dues and PCA was to pay the tax within 30 days. "Then, we gave them 3 months extension to pay the tax but PCA did not make payment," he said.
