Skipper Baichung Bhutia is confident that the Indian football team’s tour of Dubai and Spain for training and exposure will be of great benefit for the season ahead, which includes the Nehru Cup tournament to be held in August.
“Pre-season preparation goes a long way in preparing the team. It not only helps the senior players to re-group but also to welcome in youngsters,” said Bhutia, as the players got ready to leave on Friday evening for their five weeks together in a bid to work up a fine combination.
The Indian team, whose departure was delayed by a day owing to visa procedures, will spend 10 days in Dubai for a rigorous training camp and then move on to Spain where they will play four matches against second string teams in Barcelona and also use facilities there to tune up in the off season.
“It will be very important for the team to play together as a unit. It will be great to use facilities that will be available to us, but then it is not something that is going to last forever and we will soon be back here,” said Bhutia.
“The last two years have been great for us and I hope we do well this year too. It is all a matter of gelling well together as a team, and that is why this tour assumes so much of significance,” said the skipper.
With most of the players having to spend the past few days in the capital, they used the time to interact with young footballers of the capital, giving them tips on the game at clinics organised in two schools here.
“As for our time with the children in Delhi, it has been a pleasing experience and I wish them a bright future and the best of luck,” said Bhutia. Coach Bob Houghton, who pushed for this tour in order to have the national team together at venues with top class facilities, said he was hoping to make most of the time together.
“It has not been easy getting the team together and the best part is that we will get to use good facilities and exposure,” said the 61-year-old, who had, earlier this month, chastised the football system in the country.
