South Africa were bowled out for 291 in their first innings, losing four wickets for 12 runs in a dramatic collapse.
Opening batsman Alastair Cook saved England from collapse and lifted them to 133 for four at tea on the second day of the third test against South Africa on Monday.
Cook played with tremendous determination to reach 65 not out from 132 balls, denying a top-class South African attack and sharing a crucial unbroken 60-run partnership with Ian Bell.
South Africa were bowled out for 291 in their first innings, losing four wickets for 12 runs in a dramatic collapse.
South Africa claimed just one wicket in the afternoon when Morne Morkel trapped Paul Collingwood lbw for 19 but the hosts did peg back the run rate as just 69 runs were scored in 28 overs.
Neither Cook nor Bell could break the shackles imposed by the seamers but they did show more attacking intent against spinner Paul Harris, taking 24 runs off his six overs.
Snappedm up
Earlier, England snapped up the last four South African wickets in 15 balls before slumping to 64 for three at lunch as bowlers dominated the morning session.
South Africa, resuming their first innings on 279 for six at Newlands, were bowled out for 291 with seamer James Anderson taking five for 63.
Centurion Jacques Kallis fell to the first ball he faced, the second of the morning, when he edged a superb away-swinger from Graham Onions to wicketkeeper Matt Prior for 108.
Dale Steyn also failed to add to his score of 26 when he edged Anderson's first ball of the day into the slips, Jonathan Trott taking a sharp catch.
Anderson gained reward for his top-class swing bowling throughout the innings when he dismissed Morne Morkel, Graeme Swann taking a superb diving catch at second slip, and Friedel de Wet for ducks.
England were quickly in trouble in their reply when captain Andrew Strauss edged a flatfooted drive at an away-swinger from Morkel to be caught behind for two.
Cook and Trott took the score to 36 for one before Steyn struck twice in his third over.
Trott, who had cruised to 20, chopped a delivery into his stumps and, two balls later, Kevin Pietersen sent an ambitious drive straight back to the bowler, who reacted sharply to take a one-handed catch.
South Africa are 1-0 down in the four-match series having lost by an innings in the second test in Durban last week.
