It was a big day for India, but in many ways, a tougher day for Suresh Kalmadi. Though there was universal applause for the opening ceremony, the IOA president was at the receiving end of the crowd’s irritation. The 60,000-odd people in the stands made their feelings known as Kalmadi took the podium.
He tried to maintain a brave front amid jeers and whistles, even invoking Barack Obama’s campaign slogan ‘Yes we can’, but to no great effect. He thanked president Pratibha Patil, prime minister Manmohan Singh, Sonia Gandhi and even former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, during whose tenure India was awarded the CWG. But then, his nerves got the better of him.
“I welcome (former president) Abdul Kalam Azad,” he said, further angering the crowd. But the jeering slowly turned into claps as Kalmadi concluded by saying: “Our big moment is finally here… Jai Hind!”
