Australian opener David Warner has lamented his team's lazy fielding performance on the first day of the Barbados Test match, as their fielding coach Steve Nixon left the Caribbean during the Twenty20 series last week to fulfill Indian Premier League commitments with Chennai Super Kings.

Australia dropped three catches on the first day of the Test match, as West Indies ended the rain-interrupted day at 178-3.

Assistants Dene Hills and Justin Langer will oversee fielding drills this tour. Rixon was not present as Australia completed their preparations for the first Test, though fielding was not neglected at training as the tourists conducted several long catching sessions in recent days.

Warner believes his team lacked attention on field, and they should have done better.

"The main thing we focus on with Steve Rixon, our fielding coach - our throws back to Matthew [Wade] have to be basically over the stumps and on the full to him," The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Warner, as saying.

"A few of the guys were a bit lazy today with that and they're the things we pride ourselves on, and no fumbles," he added.

"Obviously we dropped three catches today which can prove crucial in any parts of the game. We've got to keep taking our chances, we pride ourselves on that and I think we've got to be better tomorrow," he said.

Shane Watson, Peter Siddle and Ricky Ponting all dropped chances on a pitch, which provided little assistance for the bowlers.

"I think we've just got to keep priding ourselves on that. That's the Australian way. We pride ourselves on being the No.1 fielding unit in the world and they're the standards that we've got to keep up," he added.
