Decision on Test and ODI leagues on November 30

The World Test and ODI leagues are all set for a take-off. The International Cricket Council (ICC) will finalise the modalities of the championships early next week when the chief executives committee (CEC) of the world body meets in Dubai. A formal blueprint for the two leagues is expected to be prepared and approved during the meeting.
The leagues are aimed at, as the ICC says, giving a context to the One-day Internationals and Test matches. Once the leagues come into effect, even dead rubbers will get relevance as the ICC wants to introduce a points system.
Based on points accumulated from each win, loss and draw, four teams will be identified and they will take part in the play-offs. The play-offs are expected to be held once every four years.
A decision about the timing of the leagues will be made at the CEC meeting, but it is more or less certain that the ODI competition will start immediately after the World Cup next year. The dates for the launch of the Test league will be known only after the meeting.
“The ICC CEC working party consisting of N Srinivasan, David Collier, James Sutherland, Nishantha Ranatunga and myself were determined that we had to provide context and content to ODI and Test cricket. At ICC, we are fortunate that we have three viable formats of the game and we need to protect and promote each of those properties,” ICC general manager David Richardson told DNA.
According to him, the executive board of the world body will meet after the CEC meeting to finalise the dates and give a formal nod to the proposal.
“The CEC working group, the CEC and the executive board have all approved those proposals and now we have to agree on the best formula for a viable points system and also to protect the integrity of the League,” Richardson said.
