With just two more matches to go, task is cut out for Air India coach Yousuf Ansari. The airmen are placed second from bottom and find themselves in real threat of being relegated to the second division.
Hence, nothing less than a win will hold good for Air India when they clash with Chirag United in a do-or-die match at the Cooperage on Sunday. This penultimate round tie of the I-League becomes crucial for their survival hopes, considering that they have Churchill Brothers to play in the final encounter.
But Ansari believes that the result against Chirag will decide their fortune in the league.
Suspensions and injuries will again hinder Air India as they will be without five of their frontline players. Dada Nabeel, Soccor Velho and Alan Dias continue to nurse their injuries, goalkeeper Arnab Das Sharma and defender Khelemba Meitei are out for double bookings. Such is Ansari’s desperation that he is ready to start with Kailash Patil, who is not match fit.
Adding to that is the low morale they have. Air India last won a match in March — when they beat East Bengal. That was seven rounds ago. Since then, they have managed four draws and three defeats.
