Will there be a convergence of the EPL and the IPL? That could be quite an abstract topic to discuss no doubt but some kind of union of the two most high-profile leagues might happen.
Sources in Mumbai and London indicate that a top English Premier League club is in the race for an Indian Premier League team.
There is no clear confirmation about the name of the side but sources reveal that one EPL club is interested in diversifying into cricket. The IPL is set for an expansion by inducting two more teams into the current eight-team competition.
When contacted, Lalit Modi confirmed to DNA that there has been a show of interest by an EPL team. “Yes, I can confirm that an English Premier League club has approached us about buying an IPL team,” the IPL chairman said. He refused to reveal the name of the club. But he did clarify that it is not Roman Abramovich’s Chelsea and even went on record in Twitter to say it.
A Manchester United spokesman denied interest in IPL. “I can assure you that it is not Manchester United,” Philip Townsend, director of communications of the club, told DNA. But United’s city rivals Manchester City did not make any comment on the specific query.
Considering recent reports of Liverpool being in heavy debts, one could perhaps hazard an informed guess that the Reds may not be in contention. But it’s only a guess.
It is not the first time that an English club has expressed interest in an IPL team. There were reports of Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) forming a conglomerate to buy a team. The bidding process is set to begin in the next couple of days and it could culminate with the announcement of the teams in the first week in March.
‘No Pune impact’: IPL authorities have denied any impact of the Saturday night blasts in Pune. “We will not be terrorised. United we will stand,” Modi said. In hindsight, it now appears that the franchisees were proved right by leaving out Pakistani players.
“We do not know what happens with Pakistan players. When would the government give a visa and when not. We can’t sacrifice a slot,” he said. Cricket Australia, meanwhile, said it will assess the security situation following the blasts.
