With K Murugan — the last candidate of the Randhir Singh group —withdrawing his candidature from the proposed December 5 Indian Olympic Association (IOA) elections, India are staring at the prospect of being suspended from the Olympic Movement. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has warned the IOA of harsh action if the ongoing election process is not stopped immediately.

In a letter to IOA acting chief VK Malhotra by IOC director general Christophe de Kepper, the world body has rejected the IOA’s suggestion to send an international delegation to resolve the matter and threatened to initiate the process of suspending the body at its December 4 executive board meeting. The threat came on a day when the Randhir camp withdrew from the elections, paving the way for the AS Chautala group to sweep the polls.

Murugan reached the office of IOA returning officer Justice (retd) AK Bali on Wednesday and withdrew his nomination for the post of secretary-general. This means that tainted CWG official Lalit Bhanot would also be declared victorious on Thursday.

Confirming this to DNA, returning officer Justice Bali said that the official announcement on the election of the candidates would only be possible after November 29, the last date for withdrawal. “I’ll only count the remaining nominations once the withdrawal process is done with. Right now, I can’t say if all the candidates of a particular group have withdrawn or not,” said Justice Bali.

The day started with Randhir asking IOA acting president VK Malhotra to call off the elections because of the “suspension” threat from the IOC. “I asked our acting president to save India from getting suspended. But it seems, he is only working in the interest of one particular group, and is not bothered about the future of Indian sportsmen,” Randhir said.

The IOC communique came a day after Malhotra issued a circular, calling the next IOA general house on December 5. “It seems the IOC is left with no other alternative than to suspend India. I fail to understand why Malhotra is hell-bent on holding elections. This would be the most shameful day in our sporting history,” Randhir said.
