Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ijaz Butt has refused to respond to the taunting statements made by former International Cricket Council (ICC) CEO Malcolm Speed in Singapore, where the council’s executive committee’s meeting is being held.

Furious over the rejection of former Australian prime minister John Howard’s bid for the ICC vice-president’s post, Speed had called Butt a ‘buffoon’ while describing Pakistan cricket as a “basket case.”

However, the PCB said it is still verifying media reports concerning Speed’s jibe.

“We will not comment on Speed’s statement at this time we are in the process of confirming the statement carried in the Australian media,” The Dawn quoted PCB spokesperson Nadeem Sarwar, as saying.

Meanwhile, former Pakistan cricketers have severely criticised Speed for his derogatory remarks against the PCB chief and Pakistan cricket.

“It is unbecoming of a former ICC official to make such comments. I hope the PCB takes up the matter seriously and demands an apology from Speed through Cricket Australia,” former captain Zaheer Abbas said.

Another former skipper Rashid Latif said he would have sued Speed for his statement.

“If I was in Mr Butt’s place, I would sue Speed for defamation,” Latif said.
