Sporting Saturday can’t get better than this. India’s generation of sportstars will descend at the MMRDA Grounds in Bandra Kurla Complex on Saturday to attend the Sahara India Sports Awards, one of the biggest honour for Indian sportsperson.
From PT Usha to Saina Nehwal, Sunil Gavaskar to Sachin Tendulkar, Nandan Bal to Leander Paes, legends and their contemporaries will all come together for this day.
Nominated from a shortlist done through a secret ballot by the Sports Journalist Federation of India (SJFI), the winners of the Sahara India Sports Awards will be selected by an eminent jury of 14 legends from Indian sports.
The jury led by Sunil Gavaskar has the likes of P Gopichand, Kamlesh Mehta, Michael Ferreira, Sandeep Patil, Anjali Bhagwat, IM Vijayan, Praveen Thipsay, Dhanraj Pillay to name a few.
Keeping in mind the memorable Commonwealth Games that India had, Sahara introduced special awards category of Outstanding Performance in Commonwealth Games (Male and Female separate). Two other special categories are for the Unsung Hero and Legend of Honour award.
Moscow Olympics gold medallist hockey player Sylvanus Dung Dung was awarded Rs5 lakh and the Unsung Hero award last year. Prakash Padukone got the Legend Honour for his lifetime achievement in badminton in 2009.
Nehwal has to compete with Mary Kom and Tejaswini Sawant to win her second consecutive Sports Woman of the year award. The Commonwealth gold medallist also stands a chance to take home the award for Memorable Moment of the Year, for her feat of winning three titles (India Open, Singapore Open and Indonesian Open) in three weeks.
