After a successful Indian Premier League (IPL) followed by a similar concept introduced at the local level as Karnataka Premier League (KPL) by Karnataka State Cricket Association, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) is now planning to have its own Twenty20 tournament.

In the MCA’s managing committee meeting held on Tuesday at its office, the association discussed with the idea of having a ‘Mumbai Premier League’ on the lines of IPL.

The idea was accepted by the managing committee and it promised to work on it. An official of the MCA said, “The idea came from Dilip Vengsarkar. It is good to have a Twenty20 league of our own. We have got a proposal from Mr Vengsarkar and we will be working out on it. The MCA organises a lot of tournaments and we will have to remove a proper slot for the Twenty20 League. As of now we haven’t decided how many teams would participate or when it is going to happen as we will be working it out soon in the next few meetings.

“Karnataka had a successful league of its own. I think it would be a hit in Mumbai too,” said the official.

The KSCA launched KPL in July this year with eight zonal teams and the T20 tournament is being played from September 9 to 23.
