Even before embarking on their long road towards glory, India’s boxers have had to deal with a minor hiccup. Given that their regular training centre (Delhi University campus) is almost 25km away from the Games Village, coach Gurbax Singh Sandhu said his boys had no other option but to find an alternate venue, albeit a smaller one, at the Village itself. “It’s a team decision. It takes an hour to reach DU, so we thought of training at the Village itself,” Sandhu told DNA on Sunday.
“Yes, the facilities are different. DU is a better training facility but that’s fine. There is nothing to complain about. Our aim is to win gold medals, nothing else. This (change of training venue) won’t bother us,” Sandhu added.
India’s pugilists have been in top form ever since Vijender Singh’s exploits at the Beijing Games and Sandhu is confident his lads will continue to win accolades at the world stage.
“We have a very strong squad, no doubt. In a way, (success at) Beijing was the turning point. Our boxers are much more mature and confident now,” Sandhu said.
He, however, warned against complacency. “There will be tough competition from England, Northern Ireland and the African countries. The draws will be out on Monday and I hope we will be lucky enough. Not that the draw really matters, but it is always good to play tough opponents later,” Sandhu said.
For the first time in CWG history, draws for boxing will be computerised and not hand-picked. Even though Sandhu refused to specifically name any ward of his, he said he would be disappointed if Vijender did not emerge supreme.
“I would be a touch disappointed (if Vijender doesn’t win gold),” Sandhu said.
And it is not just Sandhu who expects Vijender to sizzle. The 24-year-old’s training session at the Village on Sunday turned memorable when Prince Charles walked up to him for a tete-a-tete.
“Yes, it was memorable. We spoke very briefly but he congratulated us on our progress and also spoke to our coach about Indian boxing,” Vijender said.
