Virat Kohli’s much-hyped upcoming stint with English county side Surrey has been called off after the Indian cricket captain was diagnosed with a slipped disc, a media report said on Thursday.
Kohli was signed by the English county team for June ahead of India’s tour to England. The Delhi batsman had signed the deal with Surrey in his bid to prepare for the tour of England, starting in July. He was also to miss the one-off Test against Afghanistan and two T20 Internationals against Ireland (all in June) to play in the county cricket.
However, his plans have hit a roadblock with the latest complication. According to a Mumbai Mirror report, the problem was discovered by a Mumbai orthopaedic surgeon who has also told the cricketer that he may have to miss some part of the England tour.
The daily reported that the Indian skipper visited a Khar Hospital to meet the surgeon on Wednesday afternoon, where he was briefed about his health. There has been some damage to his spinal nerves, Kohli was told by the doctor and his team. Although the doctors have not recommended a surgery at this stage, he may have to miss some part of the England tour if the injury worsened.
While there has been no official confirmation from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), a board official was quoted by the report as saying that it was relieved that Kohli did not need surgery.
Kohli was roped in by Surrey to play in June for a nominal amount and the fans in England have been waiting for his appearance with bated breath.
He has reportedly informed the county of his unavailability.
Dubbing the star cricketer a "proper big dog", England all-rounder Moeen Ali had last week said that some assumptions in the Surrey dressing room are sure to come crashing down when Kohli joins the team.
"I know a few of the Surrey guys and they are not what people make them out to be a lot of the time. But if anyone in that dressing room does think they are a big dog, they will need to sit down for a little while because there is a proper big dog coming," Moeen was quoted as saying by 'The Guardian'.
