Instead of opting for an OLED display, which is a favorite among flagship models, LG will most likely opt for a LCD model for its upcoming flagship smartphone, the LG G7. OLED displays, which allow smartphones to be slimmer and more energy-efficient, are almost double or triple the price of LCD panels. This move is an effort to reduce costs, amid sustained losses of its mobile division.

The company was rumoured to launch the device during the Mobile World Congress but it was only showcased behind closed doors during the event. Now, reports suggest that the company will launch the device in May this year, which will also sport an iPhone X-like notch. It will also most likely sport LG Display’s MLCD+ display, which consumes 35 percent less power than a conventional LCD display and boasts better brightness.

According to a report by The Investor, the shift back to LCD is said to have something do with Apple. After suffering lukewarm sales of the OLED-fitted iPhone X, the US tech firm is expected to put more focus on a 6.1-inch LCD-equipped iPhone, which will likely be released together with 6.5-inch and 5.8-inch OLED iPhones in the latter half.

The previous iteration, the LG G6 launched in April last year. In terms of specifications, the device features a 5.7-inch QHD+ (1440x2880 pixels) FullVision display. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor paired with 4GB of RAM. It includes an internal storage of 32GB or 64GB which can be further expanded up to 2TB via microSD card.

It comes equipped with two 13MP rear cameras along with a 5MP front-facing camera. Connectivity options include 4G/LTE, Wi-Fi (802.11 a, b, g, n, ac), Bluetooth 4.2 BLE, NFC, Water and Dust Resistant support, UX 6.0, Dolby Vision, HDR10 and 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC. A 3300mAh battery completes the package.
