The small town is known for one of Italy's famous delicacies, the pasta all’amatriciana which is a blend of tomato and pork jowl. The 50th Annual Spaghetti Amatriciana festival was scheduled for the coming weekend at the Amatrice town square, that has now been reduced to rubble.

5.Firefighters deployed

The Vatican sent one-sixth of its fire department to Amatrice to help civil protection workers look for survivors still under the rubble and assist those already rescued.

7.Rescued from ruins
A man is rescued alive from the ruins in Amatrice.
The quake was relatively shallow at 4km below the earth's surface. The INGV (National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology) reported 150 aftershocks in the 12 hours following the initial quake, the strongest measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale. (Photo courtesy - Reuters)
8.Amatrice 'no more'
Amatrice was voted one of Italy's most beautiful historic towns in 2015. Many of those killed or missing the earthquake were visitors or tourists. The town's mayor Sergio Pirozzi told CNN affiliate RAI, “The town is no more." (Photo courtesy - Reuters)
9.Makeshift camps
