Oslo attacker listened to 'Lord of the Rings' music to drown out victims' screams

The Norwegian behind last Friday's Oslo massacre listened to film music from the Lord of the Rings on his iPod to drown out the screams of his victims, it has emerged.

In Anders Breivik's 1,500-page 'manifesto', he has described Lux Aeterna, which was used in the battle scenes, as 'very inspiring and invokes the type of passionate rage within you'.

Survivors said that Breivik was 'wearing a headset' as he calmly fired on his unarmed targets, the Daily Mail reports.

In his manifesto he praised Lux Aeterna, by the British film composer Clint Mansell, and said he planed to use it in the atrocity.

"I will put my iPod on max volume as a tool to suppress fear if needed. I might just put Lux Aeterna by Clint Mansell on repeat as it is an incredibly powerful song," he wrote.

Breivik, 32, was identified as the suspect of both the bomb blast in front of the Norwegian prime minister's office and the shooting incident in nearby Utoeya island.

If convicted, Breivik is facing a maximum of 21 years sentence under the Norwegian law.
