Overnight rains pummelled Mumbai and its suburbs water-logging several and disrupting local train services. The southwest monsoon made a heavy presence on Tuesday with Mumbai recording heavy rains during the late night hours.

In the past 24 hours, the western suburban regions received 107.3mm rain, followed by South Mumbai which was drenched in 171.5mm rain — the city's first three-digit rainfall figures.

The weatherman has predicted that during the next 24 hours medium rains will continue over the city. However, the possibility of one or two sharp spells on Wednesday cannot be ruled out.

The showers caused water logging in eight areas of the city, putting the clean-up work by the corporation at stake. In the city, areas including Masjid Bunder, Bhuleshwar and Girgaum witnessed water logging. This was followed by water blockages in both eastern and western regions, pressing the de-watering pumps into action.

Residents of Santa Cruz had to wade through water logged roads on Tuesday morning after it rained in the wee hours. "Entire Tilak Road leading to Asha Parekh Hospital on SV Road was flooded for more than four hours. There was no one to pump out water at the spot," claimed a resident living in one of the buildings on that road.

Defending the allegations levied by the resident, a civic officer from the Storm Water Drains (SWD) department said, "It took some time for the water to drain out as the tide also played a factor. However, most of the water logging was cleared before 8am," a senior civic official said.

The day also saw five house collapse incidents, across various regions of Mumbai. Three incidents were reported in South Mumbai, while one each at eastern and western suburbs. The Fire Brigade team was pressed into action when an under-repair structure at Kalbadevi caved in, trapping a resident. As per information, Hiralal Shah was successfully rescued by the fire crew from the scene. "He sustained some injuries and was rushed to the GT Hospital. His condition was reported to be stable," a fire brigade officer said.

There were 20 incidents of short-circuit in the city, mostly reported after rainwater seeping into electrical junction boxes of residential and commercial structures. Sion resident Janpra Ghatkar (45) was electrocuted at his home in Rahul Nagar in south central Mumbai.

The city, on Tuesday, lost 62 trees which were uprooted due to the heavy showers and strong winds. In south Mumbai, 28 trees collapsed — one of them crashing on a car at Byculla and wrecking it completely. In eastern and western suburbs, a total of 34 trees collapsed. There were no reports of any injuries or casualties in the said incidents.

One person was injured in a landslide at Rajiv Gandhi chawl in the Dindoshi area. Part of a hillock crashed onto the settlement injuring 30-year-old Azad Shaikh. He was rushed to the civic-run Shatabdi Hospital, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.
