Gujarat is home to 45% of pharmaceutical companies of the country. Yet, colleges offering courses in pharmacy are not getting enough students. Nearly 30% of seats in these colleges affiliated to Gujarat Technological University remained vacant last year. Are recruiters disappointed with the quality of students passing out of GTU-affiliated pharmacy colleges?

In an attempt to address this issue, GTU will hold discussions with pharmaceutical companies like Cadila and Torrent. GTU vice-chancellor Dr Akshai Aggarwal said that as the companies have been interacting with pharmacy students, their feedback will give an insight into not just the quality of students but also loopholes in the system.

According to him, knowing the loopholes will also help them understand areas where the varsity needs to improve its curriculum. "From our interaction so far, I have leant that there is need to introduce latest technology and equipment. One of the companies has suggested that if the colleges do not have a good laboratory, GTU should come up with one and students should be made to undergo six-week training. This lab may cost Rs 150 crore," he said.

However, setting up such facilities will take a few years and will not solve the problem of lack of job opportunities and skill development for the current batches, believes Aggarwal. "What about the 5,000 graduating students in pharmacy? Their future and careers are at stake as not everyone will get a job overseas or get admission to Master's course in pharmacy," he said.
Aggarwal said they have also asked pharma companies to list qualities they look for in students they recruit. This, according to him, will help the varsity arrange for additional two months' training to groom students in specific skills.
