Gone are the days when teachers used to set the exam question papers. Now, city schools are making efforts to check whether students understand the concepts taught in the classroom rather than their memorising capacity.

For this purpose, several city schools are using an online software, Test Generator, which prepares customised test papers to test students’ conceptual understanding. The online software gives access to  over 17,000 questions in English, maths and science and provides a mix of questions  such as objectives, multiple choice and regular class test questions.

Arya Vidya Mandir, Bandra; Gundecha Education Academy (GEA), Kandivali; Children’s Academy, Ashok Nagar; Shishuvan High School, Matunga, and Cathedral and John Connon School (Junior), Fort, are few of the schools which have access to the software.

“The questions are thought-provoking and enhance the quality of the paper we set. Apart from readymade conceptual question, our teachers can also add their own questions and set the class test or semester exam paper without hassles,” said Seema Buch, principal of GEA.

The school has just started using the programme and teachers are happy with  the new method. “Several teachers are pleased with the high quality questions and are just now learning to use their own creativity to frame similar objective, multiple choice questions,” she added.

The programme developed by Educational Initiatives (EI), an educational research organisation, is providing it for schools across boards such as CBSE, ICSE and state board.

“It is an online bank of questions that can be used by teachers to generate regular school and class tests. The schools are given login details and it is available for teachers any time,” said Vaishali Shah, spokesperson of EI. She further added that the teachers through this software get a chance to share their question ideas.

“Teachers can make a paper, browse questions and add their own questions. Their ideas are shared with teachers across the country. They can create a paper for unit test by taking these questions, which will not be predictable. It saves their time and is easy to use.”
