Students planning to take paramedical courses will have to appear for MHT-CET from next year. Owing to the shortage of technicians in government hospitals across the state, the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) will start a structured programme for paramedical courses from 2010. In fact, DMER is also setting up a separate council to regularise these courses.

Till now, different colleges, including technical and medical, have been conducting courses for lab assistants, operation theatre technicians, emergency services training, etc. These courses were either diploma or certificate courses and were conducted by institutes in tie-ups with hospitals. Most private hospitals have in-house training for paramedics. However, these are not regularised and systematic.

WB Tayade, director, DMER, said, "There is a great demand for paramedics. Once the course starts, it can ensure 100% placements for the graduates. As opposed to the two-year diplomas, ours will be a comprehensive three-year programme. In the first year, students will learn basic subjects, in the second the clinical ones, and the third year will be for specialisation." DMER plans to offer 22 courses in the first year.

The move comes as good news to medicos. "This will open a lot opportunities for students in the healthcare sector. If we compare with international norms, India has a shortage of paramedics. There is a need for almost 4 lakh nurses in the country," said Paresh Navalakar, director of Life Supporters Institute of Health Sciences, which conducts courses with Hinduja Hospital. "We need paramedics in almost all the departments In certain sectors like ambulance experts, there is no training at all," he added.
