The Gujarat government has kickstarted its state-wide health check-up drive for school children.

The drive will cover 1.52 crore school going kids. Talking to the media, health minister Jayanarayan Vyas said, "The drive will see participation of 303,888 officials, including 5,528 doctors and will cover 1.52 crore children."

He said that the Shala Arogya Tapas (school health check-up) will begin on December 3 and end on February 15, 2011. Giving further details, Vyas said the campaign will cover 38.18 lakh children in 47,413 anganwadis, 84.15 lakh students of 41,020 primary schools and 29.79 lakh students of secondary schools of the state.

"The drive will also cover infants of up to six years and non-school-going children up to the age of 14," he said.

As part of the campaign, the government has authorised district-level officers to take quick decision to provide free and super-specialty treatment for heart, kidney and cancer patients among the students.

"Children from BPL families will be sent outside the state for treatment," he said.  As part of the campaign, the children will be provided consultancy for diseases, besides educating them on general health, hygiene, diet, nutrition, water and sanitation.
