12 injured after bridge crashes near Junagadh

Heavy traffic has been diverted to Ajab through Madiya

A bridge over a river in Malanka village on the Manderda Sasan route near Junagadh collapsed toppling two cars atop it into the river injuring 12 people on Sunday evening.

Those in the know said that the bridge collapsed due to heavy rains in the area. Of the 12 injured, four suffered serious injuries and were rushed to the nearby hospital where they are reported to be out of danger. The rest escaped with minor bruises.

The state administration has meanwhile re routed traffic from the area with heavy vehicles being redirected to Ajab through Madiya while small ones have been directed to take the Modarda Amrapur route.

Saurabh Pardhi, collector Junagadh said that what caused the bridge to collapse is a matter of investigations. "Four people were shifted to hospital who are now stable. The bridge was around 3 decades old and it is too early to say what lead to the collapse," said Pardhi.

Sources said that locals rushed to help the injured and the 108 rushed them to the nearby hospital. The four who had to be admitted were identified as Anil Vallabhbhai, 40, Bhavika Anilbhai, 38, Darshan Anilbhai 13 and Osman Baloch, 52.

Baloch is a resident of Sasan while the other three who belong to the same family are from Amrutvel.
