97 more swine flu cases, three deaths in Gujarat

Gujarat has reported the second highest number of swine flu deaths in the country after Rajasthan this year

Swine flu cases continue unabated in the state. On Sunday, 97 more cases of H1N1 virus were confirmed in the state by authorities, the highest in a single day in this season. On Saturday, 94 cases had been confirmed, which was the highest until now.

The state health department said that three swine flu patients succumbed on Sunday. With this, the number of swine flu deaths this year went up to 69. Gujarat has reported the second highest number of swine flu deaths in the country after Rajasthan this year.

With the 97 new ones, the number of swine flu cases in the state rose to 1,889. Thirty seven of the new cases were confirmed in Ahmedabad city, eight in Vadodara city, and six in Surat city. Four cases were reported in Kutch and Mehsana, while three were reported in Rajkot city, Bhavnagar city, Amreli, Banaskantha, Patan, and Porbandar. Two cases came to light in Bhavnagar city, Sabarkantha, Anand, Junagadh, Gandhinagar city, and Kheda.Ahmedabad district, Vadodara, Botad, Jungadh city, Aravalli, Dahod, Panchmahals, and Gir Somnath reported one case each.

According to the health department, 603 swine flu patients are under treatment, while 1,217 have been discharged this year.

Govt, AMC replies

The state government, as well as the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), are supposed to file their replies before the Gujarat High Court, clarifying the steps taken by them to contain the H1N1 menace. The court had earlier ordered the government and the AMC commissioner to provide details of the infrastructure available in the hospitals operated by them for taking care of swine flu patients. It had on previous occasions severely criticised the authorities for their casual approach in managing the contagious disease.
