In May, BRT had approximately 1.3 lakh commuters using the services, which in August was recorded as 1.5 lakh on an average per day

The ongoing traffic and street management drive in the city has received flak from many but it has certainly pushed the commuters to use public transport more frequently.

The Bus Rapid Transport System, which too, has been criticized for many years now for taking away a large chunk of road, leading to slowing of traffic movements, has recorded an increase in passengers usage after the drive.

As against May this year, BRT in August witnessed nearly a 20 per cent increase on a daily basis. In May, BRT had approximately 1.3 lakh commuters using the services, which in August was recorded as 1.5 lakh on an average per day.

Professor HM Shivanand Swamy, Head of Centre of Urban Transport at CEPT University, said, “People are realizing free mobility and its benefit and it is not just BRTS that was causing problem in city but encroachment and parking as well.”
