Parents of children seeking admission under the Right to Education (RTE) Act have filed objection application with the District Education Officer (DEO). The DEO City and Rural have received a total of 160 objection applications from parents expressing their concerns with regards to school allotment. However, RTE activists and parents have snubbed the numbers saying that in many instances, they have not been heard by the officials.
While DEO city has received nearly 90 applications, DEO rural has received around 70-80 applications. With these numbers, officials are citing a successful admission process as the number of objection applications have gone down.
Speaking about Ahmedabad rural, Dilip Patel, nodal officer, RTE said, "We have received nearly 70-80 objection applications from parents but above 95% would not be genuine. This time, the objection applications are around school choice despite the fact that the parents this year were given blank space to fill in their choice of schools as per priority.
But now they want admission in a particular school and hence the objection application. However, it does not work this way. It could also be the reason that the school they have preferred does not have vacant seats."
Last year, 8845 objection applications from parents were received by the education department from across the state. The government had then issued a circular stating that applications related to change of school due to distance more than 6 km, allotted school is either shut or is likely to be shut down in near future, teaching medium as preferred not allotted, etc will be accepted and the rest have been rejected.
