The order came to the civic body from Urban Development and Urban Housing Department (UDUHD).

Defying the order of the state government, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has not formed its area committees. The order came to the civic body from Urban Development and Urban Housing Department (UDUHD).

An area committee takes care of what an area, under its wing, needs. It also decides the annual budget of the civic body. The committee comprises ex-councillors, ex-MLAs, retired government officials, teachers, NGO representatives, urban planners, architectures, women, ST/SC etc. The elected councillors of the wards are made the chairman of the committee.

The committees are supposed to form proposals or suggestions for the annual budget of the corporation and take it up with the area sabha. The ward officer is made the member secretary of the area committee.
Every ward is supposed to have three area committees, with each committee comprising 21 representatives who should conduct at one meeting every year.

“The civic body has ruled out the notification of the UDUHD. I have never heard of such committees. The notification came in 2012,” said Shahnawaz Shaikh, Congress councillor from Jamalpur.

“I had written to the mayor. But nobody has responded. The corporation budget is for the people and comes from the taxpayers. How come there is no voice of a local person?,” he further added. He wants to form area committees in all 48 wards of the city. DNA is trying to get views of mayor Bijal Patel and standing committee chairman Amul Bhatt.
