The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has served notice to three contractors over allowing discrepancies in the birth records. After scanning around one lakh documents last week, 22 birth certificates were found to have been changed. The Health Department had engaged private players on data entry contracts to computerize birth and death certificates.
The civic officials washed their hands off the matter by saying that the work was given to contractors. The civic body has served notice to three contractors, one of which is Komal enterprise. The contractor was also involved in the Aadhaar card scam, in which cards were issued without taking necessary documents. Around 50,000 cards were issued without verification of original documents.
There is a possibility that the tampered documents were used in criminal activities. It is illegal to make changes to birth certificates without affidavit and other paperwork. According to sources, such fake and fabricate documents can be acquired by spending Rs 10,000 to Rs 50,000 on each certificate. The civic body has also initiated vigilance inquiry into the matter.
