The complaint was lodged by 75-years-old Kirit Patel who is a resident of Vastrapur. As per his complaint, he had taken three different insurance policies and was paying a total premium of Rs 50,000.

On February 4, 2019, he got an email stating that if he wanted to get a refund for his insurance policies, he would have to fill out some forms and pay the process fee.

Patel fell for it and shared his details. He first paid Rs 5,000 to the imposters as the charge for transferring the refund money to his bank account. Later, the victim started receiving more emails from the accused asking for more money, and he complied thinking it was the due process.

Between February 4 and July 28, he paid Rs 35.42 lakh to the accused, but never received his insurance refund. When Patel told the accused that he no longer wanted the refund and asked them to return the money he had paid, they stopped communication.

The accused have been identified as Alok Saxena, Ramandeep Sharma and JP Prajapati.

"We have taken a complaint and have started an investigation," said VB Barad, Inspector of Cyber cell police station.

"Our technical team has been asked to get the IP addresses of the accused and track down their operating area. We suspect that the racket is run from a call centre and there might be more victims," he added
