Architect who designed 'Patang' dies

Noted architect Hasmukh Patel, who designed Ahmedabad's landmark revolving restaurant — Patang — passed away on Saturday morning after prolonged illness.

Besides Patang, some of city's major landmarks that have Patel's distinguished style are the Reserve Bank of India building, Eden Garden Stadium and Centre Point Apartments.

Architect BV Doshi, another significant name in South Asian architecture, said, "I lost a good friend today. He was professional and very meticulous about whatever he did in terms of administration, architecture or advice. 
His work has been well-recognised. Doshi was friendly and always concerned about every ones health. He had succeeded me as the director of the School of Architecture. His design for St Xavier's school had given him a great start."

Patel's death cast a shadow on CEPT University's 12th convocation as not only did he teach at the university he was the father of Bimal Patel, an architect and president of the university.

A statement from CEPT university said: With great sadness, we mourn the death of Hasmukh C. Patel, noted architect, distinguished professor and Dean Emeritus of CEPT University. Patel was the founder and chairman of HCP Design Planning and Management Pvt. Ltd. and was Honorary Director at the School of Architecture, CEPT, from 1972 to 1980 and Dean from 1976 to 1983, during which period the university consolidated its position as a premier institution.

In 2016, architects Catherine Desai and Bimal Patel released a book as a tribute to Patel, presenting 51 of his most significant projects out of over 300 buildings he designed over four decades.
