Heavy vehicles plying on Sardar Patel Ring Road have been a cause of concern for residents of Bopal as well as the administration, especially because of the danger of accidents that they pose. However, this is set to change, thanks to plans by the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (Auda) to construct a flyover at Bopal junction on the ring road. The proposal is part of Rs348.89 crore budget for financial year 2014-15. The budget was passed at the board meeting on Wednesday. Auda has also allocated Rs100 crore for housing projects.
With a view to improving connectivity and preventing traffic congestion in future, Auda had proposed over six flyovers or underpasses on SP Ring Road in the second revised draft development plan. The development authority has planned construction of flyovers at different junctions like Bopal, Odhav, Sanathal, Bhadaj, Naroda and Ognaj.
Of these flyovers, the development authority has decided to prioritise work on flyovers at Bopal and Odhav junctions. However, the work of these flyovers is not likely to start till the end of monsoon, said sources in Auda.
Auda has also allocated 29% of its budget, i.e. Rs100 crore, for housing project. The development authority plans to set up housing schemes for middle income group (MIG), lower income group (LIG) and economic weaker section (EWS).
It has also allocated Rs66.16 crore for development of roads as per the town planning schemes and development plan and Rs35 crore for development of SP Ring Road. Moreover, Rs44 crore have been allocated for drainage projects in western part of Ahmedabad and Rs17 crore for the eastern part.
Auda has focused a lot on the development of growth centres around Ahmedabad to check migration into the city. In the budget for FY 2014-15, it has allocated Rs65.98 crore for development of infrastructure facilities like road, drainage, storm water drainage and others in growth centres like Kalol, Dehgam, Mahemdabad, Bareja and Sanand.
It also plans to develop lakes and gardens at cost of Rs7.75 crore in the next financial year. The Auda also plans to build a new office of its own. The authority has allocated funds of Rs1.90 crore for ‘Auda Bhavan’ and maintenance of the present office space at Usmanpura.
