Criminal caught, but case papers missing

16 years after he was wanted for two chain snatchings in Satellite, the man was arrested by a squad set up to nab wanted criminals.

On Sunday, a squad set up to nab wanted criminals apprehended a man 16 years after he was wanted in a case and handed him over to Satellite police. However, the cops are yet to locate the original case papers related to the crime he was accused of, for which he was declared wanted in 1995.

One Ashraf Mallek, 42, a resident of Jamalpur was nabbed by the squad and handed over to Satellite police station for further procedures. It was learned from the police that Mallek was involved in two chain snatching incidents in Satellite area during in 1995-96.

At that time, the police had nabbed two of his accomplices, who had named Mallek as their partner in crime. Ever since then, Mallek had been absconding and remained a wanted man. When Mallek was finally nabbed after 16 years of ‘hide and seek’ on Sunday, the police were faced with a strange problem. According to police sources the Satellite cops are yet to register his arrest on paper, as crucial papers relating to the man’s case are missing from their records.

However, officials handling Mallek’s case denied facing any such issue. “The papers are with us, and it is just a matter of locating them from a pile of other documents, as the case is more than 15 years old. We will find them in a short time,” said a cop.
