Gujarat: 12.54 lakh youth got jobs in last five years, 4.16 lakh remain jobless

Congress MLAs had sought details of unemployed youth registered with the employment exchanges of different districts across the state.

As many as 16.71 lakh youth in Gujarat were registered unemployed till recently over the last five years. Of those, 12.54 lakh are working now. The state government shared the data at the Gujarat assembly during the recently held budget session.

The Congress MLAs had sought details of unemployed youth registered with the employment exchanges of different districts across the state. The MLAs had also sought details on all 33 districts of Gujarat. The question was included in an unstarred questionnaire that was tabled in Gujarat assembly on Friday.

All the details were given by the labour and employment minister Dilip Thakor with the break-up. As per the details, 4.16 lakh youth remained unemployed. Ahmedabad district topped in all categories that are registered unemployed youth, jobs given and the persons remained unemployed. Ahmedabad district had a total of 2.21 lakh jobless youth at district level exchanges and, of those, 1.72 lakh youth got jobs. The Gujarat government counts only those youth as unemployed who are registered with employment exchanges run by the labour and employment departments.

The government, however, also claims that many of these youth do not cancel their registration even after getting jobs in search of better opportunity from employers. The government, in cooperation with local industries, also organises job fairs at different locations to provide employment opportunity to local skilled youth.
