The Gujarat government is aiming at increasing power generation through non-conventional sources. The government on Friday announced that solar power generation will be increased by 3,000MW and wind power generation will also be raised by 1,000MW at an annual rate.
The Gujarat government is going to hold a seminar on the renewable energy sector during the Vibrant Gujarat Summit to be held in Gandhinagar from January 18-20. The officials from the energy department provided details on the seminar and the state's vision in the energy sector during a press conference they held on Friday.
Managing director in Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited, Pankaj Joshi, said, "We are targeting to increase our capacity of power generation and under this, solar power generation will be increased by 3,000MW and wind power generation will be increased by 1,000MW at an annual rate. We will be able to achieve this target by 2022."
At present, the component of non-conventional power generation is 7,200 MW against a total power generation of 27,200MW. Wind power generation contributes 28% in non-conventional power generation in the state, Joshi added. He also said that the government would start inviting bids for a proposed solar park at Dholera SIR of 1,000MW.
Raj Gopal, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary, Energy & Petrochemicals Department, Government of Gujarat said, "India has ranked second in the Renewable Energy Attractiveness Index 2017 and is set to become the third-largest renewable energy producer in the world by 2022. Gujarat has performed admirably and contributes approximately 12% to India's renewable energy basket. Already, Gujarat is the second largest producer of wind power in India and accounts for 8% of India's total installed solar power. The state has immense potential for generation of RE, with an estimated figure of over 100GW."
The government has already announced that a unique 5,000MW Ultramega Solar Park in Dholera SIR would be set up in the intertidal zone of coastal waste land. Expression of Interest was already carried out and GUVNL will issue a request for price proposal for the first 1,000MW capacity at Dholera SIR. India's first offshore wind energy project of 1,000MW is also planned to be carried out in the Gulf of Khambhat, off the coast of Gujarat, for which prospective developers have shown tremendous interest," he added.
