Gujarat Government on Wednesday extended Gutkha ban in the state by one more year.

The prohibition had first come into effect on September 11, 2012 where the Modi government banned production and sale of gutkha in Gujarat before assembly elections in December 2012.

Hoardings displaying ads of the product were also forbidden.

“Under Food Safety & Standards Act, Gujarat Government had banned production, hoardings and sale of pan masala containing tobacco or nicotine. The ban has been extended by one more year,” read a statement issued by Nitin Patel and Saurabh Patel, spokespersons of the state government.

The impact of the ban has been immediate as gutkha manufacturers have wrapped up their business in the state.

Manikchand Group, which had its manufacturing plant in Vadodara, is a noteworthy example.
