Though the deadline for regularising illegal constructions has expired, unauthorised buildings continue to crop up unabated in the city. Clearly, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has failed to take concrete steps in matter, even after the collapse of Saudagar Ni Pol in Kalupur last year.
Under Gujarat Regularisation of Unauthorised Development Act (GRUDA), state government had set March 28, 2011 as the deadline to regularise unauthorised constructions in the city. However, 2,000 illegal constructions have come up in the six zones of Ahmedabad after this deadline. AMC’s estate and town development department has removed only 17% of these constructions. Four zones — north, east, central and south — saw construction of around 400 illegal buildings, each built after expiry of the deadline.
