Making resolutions is an essential part of ushering in the New Year. At the beginning of 2012, DNA talks to prominent officials in the city to find out what they have in their mind for the New Year. If our officers have their way, 2012 will be a year of better managed traffic, cleaner and more hygienic surroundings, lower crime rate, effective public transport, and above all, a more livable Ahmedabad.

Asit Vora, Mayor This year, we want to work towards a slum-free city. For this, 17 projects have been prepared, out of which seven have been already sanctioned and AMC has started working on them. Secondly, we are planning for recycling of water for non-potable use. This will be a private-public partnership model under which 550 MLD water will be recycled for optimum utilisation of water. We had floated expression of interest (EOI) for the same and have received a good response. Presently, we are studying proposals, following which we shall select the best one.

Vijay Nehra, District collectorWe want to make Ahmedabad the most livable city by all standards and not according to just one survey. We want people to be proud to live in Ahmedabad and feel that the state government is delivering on their expected lines. We want to make them feel that city is changing every day. There will be more transparency, efficiency and speed in providing services to people.

Shamsher Singh, JCP, Special Branch "The wish for the New Year will always be that law and order are maintained. But this time around, we will try to make efforts to ensure that the public is not inconvenienced, particularly during bandobast. Usually it so happens that during bandobast that certain areas are closed or traffic has to be diverted, which ends up affecting people. Hence this year we will try to come up with measures that can either completely eliminate such inconveniences or, if that is not possible, reduce it considerably."

Guruprasad Mohapatra, Civic chief We had started intensive cleaning drive from 2011. We want to make Ahmedabad the cleanest city of the country. We wish to improve sanitation and hygiene in the city. We also want to increase the number of gardens in the city as well as improve the condition of existing gardens so that people can have better recreation facilities. Plantation on road dividers will be started. The length of BRTS route is 45 km at present, which will be increased to 90 km in the new year. Public transportation will be better with addition of more buses on AMTS and BRTS routes.

Siddharth Khatri, DCP, Traffic, East  We will work for improving traffic management of traffic in the city this year. The priority will be non-working signals across the city. We will work towards making all such traffic signals functional. We have organised a meeting with AMC in coming days to address this issue. Another area of focus will be CCTV camera installation on major traffic points. These cameras will drastically improve the efficiency of the traffic department. The traffic department is working towards implementing e-chalan project in this year.

Anita Karwal, Chief Electoral Officer, GujaratWe want to start a system where a voter can complete all activities related to registration process at a single window. It will be like a one stop shop. We are hoping to implement it in coming five to six months. Motivating youth and roping in young voters, especially women, is our biggest focus this time.

Maninder Singh Pawar, DCP Zone-6 "In the new year we should be making efforts at ensuring that there is better interaction between the police and the public. This will help in removing several misconceptions. The efforts should not only be at detecting crime but preventing it as well."

Sandip Singh, DCP Zone-I  "Last year, we had managed to considerably improve our detection rate. We plan to further work on this in the coming year. Efforts will also be aimed at arresting the crime rate."
