Wednesday was another rain-soaked day for Ahmedabad as the city received showers for a second consecutive day. The clouds, which seemed to have cleared in the morning, returned with a vengeance in the afternoon before sputtering away by the evening.
Ahmedabad received 28mm of rainfall on Wednesday with waterlogging and traffic jams setting the tone for the day. Most commuters were caught unawares by the intermittent rain and were found taking shelter in shops and office buildings.
Interestingly, temperatures city recorded a maximum temperature of 31.5 degree celsius despite continuous rain all day.
Among infrastructure failures reported during the day, two cave-ins were reported from east and south zone of Ahmedabad while four incidents of uprooted trees were reported from across Ahmedabad.
AMC also received two complaints of dangerous buildings on Wednesday, of which the civic body is working on a plan to bring down poorly maintained part of a building in Behrampura. The second complaint was from Sarangpur.
As per Met department, overall rain in the state has decreased slightly as compared to Tuesday. It also predicted one or two spells of rain in some parts of the city on Thursday. “The climatic system responsible for the rains has moved over to east Rajasthan. A decrease in rain is likely over next one day,” said Jayanta Sarkar, director of IMD, Ahmedabad.
“There is a deficit but it is likely to be covered later in this month and in August. Formation of some more systems are likely to bring rain,” said Sarkar when asked if there is shortfall in monsoon over Gujarat.
Meteorological and satellite data centre of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has predicted light rains for the city on Thursday followed by no rain for the following two days.
