Provision of Rs 850 made for construction of retaining walls and promenade

The showpiece of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's development talk – Sabarmati Riverfront — is all set to extend its length. Right now, it has an average 11km on each side, covered under the first phase of the project.

After the announcement of deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel, civic chief Mukesh Kumar made a provision of Rs 850 crore for the second phase of the riverfront, while announcing a draft budget for the 2018-19 fiscal.

The iconic Riverfront of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has an existing length of about 11km on the eastern and western bank of the Sabarmati River. An addition of 5km will be made on each side. AMC has also consulted the Army authority as some part of the land is going to be in the Cantonment area at Shahibaugh.

Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL) a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) of the AMC, has already invested Rs1,152 crore for the first phase of the project. This is the place where most Amdavadis love to spend time, where events and festivals are taking place at large.

"We are extending the project now. We have already initiated the expansion permission from the Army. Now the state government will also allot us with land. In the total of 101 acres of land, the western side has 57 acres and the eastern side 54," said Pravin Patel, standing committee chairman of the civic body.

Patel added that the estimate also includes RCC roads on both sides.

General manager of SRFDCL Jagdish Patel said the design of the proposed extended park will be slightly different. "The expansion is proposed from Dafnala to Indirabridge on the eastern side and from torrent power house to Indira bridge on the western side. The width at this side is deeper," said the general manager.

"The design might change this side, keeping in mind the flooding situation during monsoon, when river receives excess water from Dharoi Dam," added Patel.
