On Saturday, the managing director of Metro-Express Link for Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad (MEGA) said that the organization's name is going to be changed soon. The new name, Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) Limited, was decided in the last board meeting of the company.
“The new name will be GMRC and we will officially announce it within a week. In line with other agencies incorporated to execute Metro Rail projects across various states, we have decided to transform MEGA to GMRC,” said IP Gautam, managing director MEGA.
“This is to ensure that the agency would be capable to execute Metro Rail projects in other cities of Gujarat. And, doesn't remain confined to Metro Rail project in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar,” he further said.
He further said that the move is followed by the notification of central government which says in each state there will be only one Metro company. “This one will be a mother company and then for other cities, there will be subsidiary companies operating. Same directors now will be handling for different projects like Phase 2 of the current project,” he added further.
After the name change, the company will be called GMRC and city's project will be called Ahmedabad Metro, likewise, Surat's project would be Surat Metro under the head of GMRC. “Structure and stake will remain the same as per the existing company. This is a successful model running elsewhere in other parts also,” the MD said.
The state government is planning to have Metro rail for Surat city and Dholera. So all the three upcoming Metro rail projects will be under one umbrella. Change in the company's name was initiated in November.
The GMRC will be the third in the country to handle other respective metro projects in the state. The MEGA has asked for the name to the registrars of the companies and will announce new name next week. The approval from the central government on the name change came on November 22.
